Prompt: Writing about an offensive encounter can bring up different emotions, even when the story is imagined. What emotions did you experience while writing your story? What part of the writing affected you the most, and why?

Prompt Response: I felt unnerved and disgusted during the writing process. As I intake a lot of experiences from minorities when they have been bullied and harassed because of their skin color. So it felt cruel to basically write a story where I was dehumanized. The part of the writing that affected me the most was being chained down. As I knew that I could never truly fight back. Lakeside would always blame the victim and the aggressor if they both fought each other, and suspend both of them. To add, ROTC would kick you out for fighting, despite being the victim. Even worse, when you’re older, you can’t act on your emotions, it’s reality.

Summary: In class, we wrote 2 paragraphs about the impact of a derogatory term used against us, either from experience or in a hypothetical scenario.

Reflection: It made me realize how despite my generation being mostly progressive, there are still strong roots of racism in people. As I confronted with myself that it is easy for me to be attacked as people can just be racist against me.
